The Game's Dodge Roll Warrants Recognition

If you've played Elden Ring, or most other third-person combat game, chances are you're familiar with the fantastic mechanic called the “evasion roll.” This evasion technique allows your character to perform a forward, sideways, or backward ground roll to avoid any enemy attacks and create distance from opponents. Sounds handy, wouldn't you say?

The evasion roll, however, has received plenty of criticism, not simply as a result of the somersault; it's been called unintelligent, a cop-out, and an implausible action — and sometimes, I concur. You should see me somersaulting past hostile mobs in another popular RPG — can't touch this Geralt! But the title's rolling dodge is the dodge roll to surpass every other rolling dodges, and here's the reason.

Regarding this title, the designers identified a clever approach to address all opinions claiming the maneuver is too easy: just grant every enemy unreasonable strength, multiply it, and every Tarnished who approaches them will be eternally grateful because of their evasion move, me included. Given the intense difficulty, successfully rolling to victory comes across as a triumph, instead of an unfair advantage.

No other evasion method in the game comes close to this sense of satisfaction and dependability, as quick dashes provide minimal movement and blocking attempts are readily overcome by tough opponents. Someone once recommended jumping as a go-to game evasion method, but aside from not providing ideal movement, I didn't see how receiving a fatal blow could enhance my odds of overcoming challenges (inexperience, possibly).

Perfecting the Skill

But even though the rolling dodge offers respite in an incredibly challenging experience, it requires practice. First of all, the game's dodge roll merely initiates a window of invulnerability once you let go of the evasion key, which stops a hasty, frantic retreat from dangerous scenarios. Moreover, while it might transport you away from opponents, it's significantly more useful to employ it as a chance to advance, optimally at their back, and strike blows. In conclusion, it remains necessary to understand and anticipate opponent moves, because rolling prematurely of an extended wind-up may end your invincibility prior to the hit connecting… causing significant harm.

A Balanced Mechanic

Although evasion-rolling in rapid sequence may look a bit ridiculous (kudos to the Witcher anew), this isn't really an option in this title. Certainly, that fails to transform it into a believable combat move — exactly the reason it would be pure horror to experience it in a product like Kingdom Come: Deliverance — however, this is a flashy fantasy title being considered, thus why worry?

Comparable to any well-executed rolling dodge, Elden Ring's rolling animation is spruced up with a small acrobatic jump at the beginning, providing a dynamic sensation as opposed to placing the avatar downward. Based on your equipment, the maneuver might appear extremely nimble or relatively slow, yet it's always swifter and more seamless than the evasion moves found in the earlier games. Certainly, you will stick your big blade into the ground while equipped with it, but that's your own fault for failing to use ranged weapons (I'm joking — steer clear of Elden Ring using ranged options).

Optimal Harmony

Elden Ring's evasion system establishes an ideal equilibrium between challenge and opportunity, providing prospects of success while threatening to take that hope away at the tiniest misstep. Master this technique, and you'll obtain not just victory, but gratification.
